GA GOP Chair Race to Highlight State Convention.

Saturday, 25 December 2010 - Cobb Resident Sue Everhart will sek a third term as chair of the Georgia State Republican Party. During the December Cobb GOP Breakfast on December 4th Everhart formally announced her candidacy. In the audience, and also addressing his run for the State GOP chair run was Shawn Hanley, chair of the Fulton County GOP. Hanley announced his candidacy on November 18th, expecting Sue Everhart to follow the tradition of stepping down after serving 2 terms.

   Sue Everhart was successfully elected to a second term without the backing of Sonny Perdue and it is no secret that Nathan Deal is seeking to get his own candidate elected to the top GOP Party position. Although no formal announcement has been made, several names have been floated through the rumor mill. The most mentioned name is that of Cobb County resident and Deal transition team member Trisha Pridemore. Pridemore has not officially announced and it is not expected that she would until after the transition and inauguration are complete.

  The Georgia Republican Party, unlike the Georgia Democrat Party, elects the State Chairman at the State Convention in odd numbered years for a term of 2 years. When the Democrats had a strangle hold on the Governor's  Office, the Governor   selected the Party Chair for the Democrats. In a year of anti-incumbacy sentiment and given that Nathan Deal barely squeaked by Karen Handel in a Primary runnoff, I just don't think the Governor elect has enough political capital to unseat an incumbent State Party Chair who presided over a sweep of all the State Offices in the last election.

   With the table set for a three way race, it should be an interesting 5 months leading to the GOP State Convention in Macon next May.

PRE ELECTION PREDICTIONS

01 November 2010 - With the elections only 10 hours away, it is time for me to boldly go out on a limb and make my pre election predictions. So standing naked for all the world to see here are my predictions:

With the Democrat Safe and the Republican Safe currently at 48 to 45, seven seats are rated as toss-ups. In order to capture the Senate, Republicans need 6.  I predict they will win 5, resulting in a 50 50 split Senate.

California -  Democrat Boxer over Republican Fiorina
Colorado - Republican Buck over Democrat Bennet
Illinois - Republican Kirk over Democrat Giannoulias
Nevada - Republican Angle over Democrat Reid
Pennsylvania - Republican Toomey over Democrat Sestak
Washington - Republican Rossi over Democrat Murray
West Virginia - Democrat Manchin over Republican Raece.

Possible Upset - Fiorina over Boxer.

Be prepared to stay up late.

Cobb GOP Breakfast Draws Large Crowd As Early Voting Starts

With early voting already underway and the Georgia primaries set for July 20th, candidates are scrambling to round up votes as they enter the home stretch for the primaries.


Two events were front and center today for local candidate. The first event was the monthly Cobb County Republican Breakfast at Williamson Brothers Barbecue. Three Candidates served as headline speakers. The first was Jeff Chapman, candidate for Governor, who joins a very crowded field of 6 other candidates on the Republican ticket. Can anyone say “Runoff”?

Maria Sheffield, candidate for Insurance Commissioner, gave a very inspiring speech and seems to be the best qualified of the candidates to have appeared in front of the Cobb GOP breakfast crown in the previous months.

Brian Kemp finished the session campaigning for Secretary of State. Kemp was recently appointed as interim Secretary Of State by Governor Sonny Perdue when Karen Handel resigned from the office to run for Governor. Kemp spent a large amount of his time delivering a scathing smack down against his sole Republican opponent Doug MacGinnitie for his campaign tactics.

Later on in the day a Senatorial fundraiser for U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson was hosted by Congressman Phil Gingrey, Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle, and Congressman Tom Price at the Mathis/Davidson/Garrett Property. Isakson is running unopposed in the Republican Primary.

Illegal Aliens Cause Stir in Court House Construction.

12 February 2009 - A big tip of the hat to the activist group Jobs for Georgians for holding Cobb County government accountable. Below is a formal statement from Cobb Commission Chairman (and candidate for State Attorney General) Sam Olens regarding the recent dust up over the illegal aliens working for a subcontractor on the construction site of the Cobb County Courthouse. (Marietta, GA -- February 11, 2010)

Last Thursday I received an e-mail concerning possible illegal workers at the County Courthouse project. The e-mail was forwarded to Turner, the general contractor, requesting immediate review of the allegations and a response forthwith.

Turner had affidavits per SB 529 and federal law, for all of its subcontractors on the job site. Unfortunately, it appears that a subcontractor, Zebra, hired a sub sub without complying with SB 529. The “Jobs for Georgians” complaint was verified and the sub sub has been removed from the site. We thank “Jobs for Georgians” for bringing this illegal activity to our attention. Turner is now seeking affidavits of sub subs and is reviewing their policies to include spot checks and name checks with I-9s.

Cobb County was in all likelihood the first local government in Georgia to fully comply with SB 529 and we are embarrassed and frustrated by Zebra’s alleged actions. All tax dollars should be sp¬ent consistent with Georgia law, assuring all labor on job sites is legal.

We have requested that Turner review all available legal options concerning the actions of Zebra and seek 100% compliance with the law at all times. Legal issues remain regarding possible fines and breach of contract. I have directed that the pertinent file be submitted to ICE for investigation.

Further, we remain concerned that SB 529 needs further strengthening. Proposed HB 1164 provides penalties for governments and contractors but not subcontractors. It is apparent that even with governments requiring the pertinent affidavits, contractors and subcontractors need to be fully responsible for every single employee on a job site.

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010 -  Congressman Tom Price kicked off the new election year Saturday with a fiery talk at the standing room only Cobb GOP Breakfast. The talk was optimistic, and Price stressed how the Republicans are continuing to offer positive alternatives to the Obama administration's efforts on Health Care, Energy Policy, Immigration, Unemployment, Deficit Spending, Closing Guatanimo Bay, and National Security.

19 November 2009 - On Tuesday evening at the Cobb County GOP meeting, Trisha Pridemore unveiled the new Cobb County GOP website. Speaking as a software engineer who has spent most of my career working on visual displays and graphics I was truley impressed. The site is well laid out, integrated, and concise. NORTH GEORGIA STATE FAIR

27 September 2009 - The North Georgia State Fair is a major recruiting opportunity for the Cobb GOP and yesterday was no different. I had the opportunity to work the morning shift with Lynn Askea, Barbara Hickey, Wayne Brown, John Delves and District 3 Commission candidates JoAnn Birrell and Earl Stine. Rainey weather discouraged a lot of fair goers, but we still had a good time and hope do a lot of recruiting until the end of the fair on October 4th.

Speaking of District 3 Commission Candidates, I have counted 5 so far - Stephen Moon, Steven Ellis, Troy Welker, JoAnn Birrell, and Earl Stine. I believe all are 1st time candidates for public office and are seeking to replace Tim Lee who will be running for Cobb Commission Chair.Rumor has it Lee may be challenged by former Cobb School Board member Lindsey Tippins.

09 July 2009 - I discovered a new phrase today that I'm sure you will be hearing a lot about in the not too distant future. Remember these words "Piven and Cloward" and then do your own research. I am an engineer. I am not a conspiracy theorist, I go where the verifiable facts take me. I have often scratched my head and wondered why such a talented group of people as is found in the Obama administration, (If you think they are all clueless then you are only deceiving yourself) would ignore facts and history, even logic, in some of their decisions. For instance, WHY run up the largest debt in the nation's history during such a severe financial crisis? Why stress an already overburdened infrastructure with policies such as cap and trade and national health care?

July 4th 2009 - with the current economic crisis and the growing dissatisfaction with Washington's addiction to unadulterated spending, this years July 4th celebration took on an activist tone. Things started off Friday evening at Jim Miller Park where Herman Cain broad cast his popular radio show from 7 to 9 PM. The event was attended by a surprising large crowd of 7,000 people. It was one of over 1300 TEA parties scheduled to take place this weekend to protest government spending. The event was free to the public and many of the families there I spoke with were stopping by on their way out of town for the 4th of July weekend.

The fun continued on July 4th with the 4th of July Parade down Roswell Street in Marietta. The Cobb GOP Float took 1st place. Congratulations to Trisha Pridemore and the Float Team!

After the parade the Cobb County GOP held their annual Barbecue at Jim Miller Park. It included a salute to the armed forces, and speeches by all 5 candidates for governor. There were also speeches by candidates for Secretary of State, Insurance Commissioner, Agriculture Secretary, Lt. Govenor, etc. It makes one wonder if there is still such a thing as an off election year.

In contrast to the national party, the State GOP party is well stocked with candidates with political experience and should do well in next years 2010 state races.

Gwinnett Tea Party to Merge With Cobb

21 June 2009 - As protesters fill the streets of Tehran today, many of us here in the States prepare to celebrate that day when our country took similar actions to secure our freedoms. It is an inherent part of our Declaration of Independence that "all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights" and that "whenever any form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or abolish it".

Atlanta Tea Party in Gwinnett forced to cancel

Suwanee, GA. - The Atlanta Tea Party was forced to cancel it's Independence Day celebration in Gwinnett, after losing it's location due to the objection of Gwinnett Place Mall (a Simon company.) The Tea Party had been scheduled to take place in the parking lot of the old Macy's building at Gwinnett Place since March.

"It is unfortunate the event had to be canceled," said Julianne Thompson, event co-organizer. She continued, "The old Macy's building is on private property, and not owned by Simon Malls, however the mall manager asked the property owner and I to come in the office on Thursday of this week, and told us Simon does not want political events on it's property. They were also concerned about the fact we were using the term "protest." Although the event was on private property, the mall was able to assert authority on the matter due to reciprocal property easement agreements."

Event Co-Chair Debbie Dooley stated, "Our Atlanta Tea Party team tried for the next day and a half to find an alternative location large enough for the event, and with the proper layout for our vendors, children's activities, and fireworks show, but we could not find anything suitable that would have been available on July 4th."

Thompson said, The Atlanta Tea Party organizers want to thank everyone in Gwinnett who worked hard to try to make this event a success: Judi Quigley, Bill Simon, Mark Williams (Printing Trade Company,) Kathy Hildebrand, Theresa Kenerly, Brett Harrell, and George Thorndyke (who was graciously allowing us to use his property free of charge, and sponsoring fireworks.) I also want to thank the Gwinnett Place Community Improvement District for welcoming us to the area, and the Gwinnett and 7th District GOP for promising volunteers for the event."

CONSERVATIVE PAC FORMING IN EAST COBB

GA Grassroots in action is a having a Pasta Night (Spaghetti Dinner) this Saturday, June 13th at the Mountain View Community Center in Cobb County on Sandy Plains Rd.

As the State Coordinator for the Tax Day Tea Parties on April 15th here in GA, I have traveled across GA speaking to fellow citizens. One thing I have learned is that each of YOU want an opportunity to speak and be heard, not just show up to hear other folks talk. I have also heard an outcry for actions that will help us be EFFECTIVE in regaining control of the very government that is supposed to be serving us by protecting our rights, not serving their own self-interests in career longevity at the peril of our rights and liberties. I skipped the preliminaries on Friday and attended the Victory Dinner on Friday night with the keynote speaker being former Oklahoma Sooner J.C. Watts. Watts is a man of conviction who served in various GOP leadership positions during his time in Congress.

Saturday I attended the Breakfast which featured Michael Steele, the National RNC Director. Like Watts, he emphasised his humble background and the virtues of hard work. Both men espoused strong conservative principals.

The convention opened up at 10:00 AM and was called to order by Convention Chairman Randy Evans. This was Evan's last convention in an official capacity as he will be joining Governor Sarah Palin's Political Action Committee in Alaska as she gets ready for a national run at the White House.

Toby Carr was introduced as the new executive director of the State GOP. Ann Lewis is replacing Randy Evans as general counsel.

Debbie McCord of Columbia County received the AA Richardson Award.

Randy Evans received the Pioneer Award.

Michael Steele took the stage once again as the RNC Chairman.

J.C. Watts spoke on his time as Republican Conference Chairman in 2004 and of his 5 children.

J.C. Watts will be speaking at the Church of the Apostle on July 19th. He also heads up the J.C. Watts Foundation.

Cobb County had a total of 124 out of a possible 172 delegates show up for the Convention.

11:40 Saxby Chambliss spoke on the re-election campaign of JohnnyIsakson. I expect Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin to be his Democratic opponent in November of 2010.

11:50 Johnny Isakson Spoke.

Sue Everhart is elected to a second term as GA GOP Chair without opposition.

12:00 Rob Doll defeats Debbie Gronginger for 1st Vice Chair.

B.J. Van Gundy defeats Gloria Alread for 2nd Vice Chair.

12:15 Secretary of State Karen Handel, candidate for Governor, addressed thew 1206 Delegates at the convention. She was followed at 12:30 by her main competition, Insurance Commissioner Jon Oxendine.

1:10 Congressman and candidate for Governor Nathan Deal.

1:20 6 Resolutions are introduced out of Committee.

All passed on a voice vote.

1:35 Herman Cain spoke. He will be in Marietta Square tomorrow night at 7:00 PM.
1:45 Speaker of the House Glen Richardson (Candidate for Governor?) spoke.
1:50 Tommy Williams spoke on behalf of Casey Cagle (Candidate for Lt. Governor).
2:00 Sonny Perdue Spoke, farewell as a Governor.
2:20 Convention Adjourned.

TEA PARTY FOLLOW UP

Sunday, 26 April 2009 - Well it has been a busy 10 days! Of course April 15th was the hugely successful TEA party. I want to give recognition to all the people who worked behind the scenes to keep the events in Marietta and Atlanta safe, peaceful and very well organized. A special Thank You goes to the truly grass roots organization of Claire Waldron (Cobb Coordinator) and Sherri Reese (State of Georgia Coordinator). Despite what Nancy Pelosi would have you believe, these two women were not the typical political powerbrokers you would expect to be at the head of a movement like this. They are just a couple of moms concerned about their children's future.

Thursday evening April 23rd things got kind of rowdy at the Cobb County School District board meeting. A packed house let the fur fly as the board heard comments from parents on the new Standards Based Report Card (1-2-3 grading system) and the possible reduction of school bus routes. The meeting is repeated on a regular basis on Channel 24 on Comcast.

Saturday, April 25th, Senator Chip Rogers gave an end of session debriefing at his regular town hall meeting at the Mountain View public library. The session covered the legislative bills which were passed at the recently concluded session of the Georgia General Assembly.

Start making plans for the Cobb County 4th of July picnic and the 4th of July follow up TEA Party at the state capitol on July 4th. It's going to be even bigger and better. Check back here for details when they become available!
