Thursday, May 21st, 2009 - The GA State Republican Convention took place in Savannah, GA this past weekend, amid national media speculation of how the Republican Party would re brand itself after crushing defeats in 2006 and 2008. The mood was defiant and spirited as set by Keynote speakers J.C. Watts, Michael Steele, and Herman Cain. Here is a brief synopsis of the convention:
I skipped the preliminaries on Friday and attended the Victory Dinner on Friday night with the keynote speaker being former Oklahoma Sooner J.C. Watts. Watts is a man of conviction who served in various GOP leadership positions during his time in Congress.
Saturday I attended the Breakfast which featured Michael Steele, the National RNC Director. Like Watts, he emphasised his humble background and the virtues of hard work. Both men espoused strong conservative principals.
The convention opened up at 10:00 AM and was called to order by Convention Chairman Randy Evans. This was Evan's last convention in an official capacity as he will be joining Governor Sarah Palin's Political Action Committee in Alaska as she gets ready for a national run at the White House.
Toby Carr was introduced as the new executive director of the State GOP. Ann Lewis is replacing Randy Evans as general counsel.
Debbie McCord of Columbia County received the AA Richardson Award.
Randy Evans received the Pioneer Award.
Michael Steele took the stage once again as the RNC Chairman.
J.C. Watts spoke on his time as Republican Conference Chairman in 2004 and of his 5 children.
J.C. Watts will be speaking at the Church of the Apostle on July 19th. He also heads up the J.C. Watts Foundation.
Cobb County had a total of 124 out of a possible 172 delegates show up for the Convention.
11:40 Saxby Chambliss spoke on the re-election campaign of JohnnyIsakson. I expect Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin to be his Democratic opponent in November of 2010.

Sue Everhart is elected to a second term as GA GOP Chair without opposition.
12:00 Rob Doll defeats Debbie Gronginger for 1st Vice Chair.
B.J. Van Gundy defeats Gloria Alread for 2nd Vice Chair.
12:15 Secretary of State Karen Handel, candidate for Governor, addressed thew 1206 Delegates at the convention. She was followed at 12:30 by her main competition, Insurance Commissioner Jon Oxendine.

TEA PARTY FOLLOW UP
Sunday, 26 April 2009 - Well it has been a busy 10 days! Of course April 15th was the hugely successful TEA party. I want to give recognition to all the people who worked behind the scenes to keep the events in Marietta and Atlanta safe, peaceful and very well organized. A special Thank You goes to the truly grass roots organization of Claire Waldron (Cobb Coordinator) and Sherri Reese (State of Georgia Coordinator). Despite what Nancy Pelosi would have you believe, these two women were not the typical political powerbrokers you would expect to be at the head of a movement like this. They are just a couple of moms concerned about their children's future.

Thursday evening April 23rd things got kind of rowdy at the Cobb County School District board meeting. A packed house let the fur fly as the board heard comments from parents on the new Standards Based Report Card (1-2-3 grading system) and the possible reduction of school bus routes. The meeting is repeated on a regular basis on Channel 24 on Comcast.
Saturday, April 25th, Senator Chip Rogers gave an end of session debriefing at his regular town hall meeting at the Mountain View public library. The session covered the legislative bills which were passed at the recently concluded session of the Georgia General Assembly.
Start making plans for the Cobb County 4th of July picnic and the 4th of July follow up TEA Party at the state capitol on July 4th. It's going to be even bigger and better. Check back here for details when they become available!

Cobb GOP Rallies at County Convention
About 194 delegates gathered at the Roswell Street Baptist Church on Saturday to hold the annual Cobb County Republican Convention. During the convention which was led by convention chairman Randy Evans, delegates hard from state and national elected officials, adopted resolutions and elected delegates to the District and State Convention, and chose new officers for the coming election cycle.
As he has done for the past several years GOP State Counsel Randy Evans led the proceedings. He currently has a syndicated political column to which you can subscribe by sending an e-mail to fsharp@mckennalong.com .
Lt. Governor Casey Cagle was the first of several elected officials to speak, and was followed by Cobb County Chairman Sam Olens.
Sam Olens spoke to the fact that Cobb County is not in deficit, has had no furloughs or layoffs, and has not raised the millage rate (currently at 9.6), or cut any government services. They have been able to do this with smart government, delaying merit pay, instituting an 18 month hiring freeze, and curtailing planned capitol outlays .
Sam Olens was followed by Congressman Phil Gingrey, State Senator and candidate for Lt. Gov. David Schafer, State Senator John Wiles, and State Senator Judson Hill.
The following resolutions were adopted by the Party as presented by Barry Paulk of the resolutions committee:
1. Resolution for Gun Cary Rights
2. Resolution for the Sanctity of Human Life
3. Resolution for the Acknowledgement of Parental Rights
4. Resolution for States Rights
5. Resolution for the Endorsement of Sue Everhart for State Chair of the Georgia State GOP.
Phil Daniell of the Credentials Committee certified that there were 444 delegates and 6 alternates elected to the Cobb GOP County Convention of which 192 delegates and 2 alternates actually attended.
Congressman Tom Price (6th Congressional District), Chairman of the House Republican Study Committee, then spoke to the party faithful. He was followed by State Majority Leader Senator Chip Rogers and State Insurance Commissioner and candidate for Governor John Oxendine.
The Current GOP County Chair then acknowledged 1st Vice Chair Bob Koncerak for his service to the party. Koncerak is leaving Cobb County and relocating to Gwinnett.
The following list of candidates was elected without opposition by acclamation:
1. Scott Johnson – Chairman
2. Claire Waldron – 2nd Vice Chair
3. Peggy Henderson - Secretary
4. Lynn Askea – Assistant Secretary
In the contested races Billie Dendee defeated Kyle Coates for Assistant Treasurer and Darryl Wilson defeated Fred Elrod for 1st Vice Chair.
The convention adjourned around 1:30 PM

Cobb County's Model Democrat
02 April 2008 - Annette Kesting.First she's in, then she's out, then she's in again, and now she is out again. No, we are not talking about the race for Cobb County Commissioner, we are talking about bankruptcy. Chapter 13. After filing Chapter 13 on March 3rd, Kesting announced Tuesday, in a phone interview with Ashley Hungerford of the MDJ, that she does not have to go through bankruptcy. "I'm not in bankruptcy." Kesting also filed bankruptcy in 2007, so at least she is consistent :) Add to this a couple of foreclosures and and a whole host of building code violations on her rental properties and you can see why I award Mrs. Kesting the Conservative Sentinel's first annual Model Democrat Award.

District Conventions will take place for the 13th, 11th, and 6th Congressional Districts on Saturday, April 19th at 10 AM. COBB YRS TO REFORM
Wednesday, February 6th, 2008 - The Cobb County Young Republicans have reformed and will be holding s meeting on Lincoln's birthday, Tuesday, February 12 at 7:00 PM. The meeting location will be the Pub at the Marietta Conference Center located at 500 Powder Springs Drive. The guest speaker will be Tad Leithead, SR. V.P. of Cousins Properties and a citizen member of the ARC.
In celebration of Lincoln's 199th Birthday, the Cobb YRs will be offering 2008 memberships for $1.99.
The Cobb YR Club was my introduction to GOP politics when I moved to GA in 1991 at the tender age of 28. It is a great way to network with other young professionals and to get involved in the community.

ARE YOU READY FOR SUPER TUESDAY?
3 February 2008 - It was a busy day yesterday for political junkies and the coming weeks will be no different. Grover Norquist spoke at the Cobb Republican breakfast on behalf of the Americans for Tax Reform. He likened tax revenues to the "oxygen of big government spending" and called Republicans who raise taxes, "The rat heads in the coke can", i.e. they give the brand name a bad name. He also advocated for government spending transparency similar to what the states of Missouri and Texas currently have.
At 10 AM the Georgia Christian Alliance held their Faith, Family, and Freedom Event at Riverwood High School in Atlanta.
At 5:30 PM at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center Senator John McCain made a campaign appearance where he received the endorsements of Georgia's 2 U.S. Senators, Saxby Chamblis and Johnny Isakson.
Gov. Mike Huckabee was scheduled to make an appearance today at Woodstock Baptist Church at the 9:30 and 11:00 Am services.
Looking ahead:
Mitt Romney will be in Buckhead on Monday, February 4.
Georgians go to the polls for the Presidential primary on Tuesday February 5th.
The Cobb Republican Party will hold it's 1st quarterly meeting of 2008 on
Thursday, February 7th at Marietta City Hall.

GIULIANI VISITS COBB
Saturday, January 5th 2008 - First of all Happy New Year! With the arrival of 2008 comes a presidential election year which is already in full swing. The Iowa caucuses have produced front runners in both parties who are out side the mainstream political elite, and the approach of the Georgia primaries on Super Tuesday looms ever closer.
In relation to the Georgia Primary, I had to post this photo of Rudi Giuliani with yours truly, even though it was more than a month old. While I am not officially endorsing any candidate(like that would do them a lot of good), I can say I find strong positives with all the top tier candidates. I will continue to cover the major candidates as they visit Cobb.
On Saturday, January 5th, State Senator Chip Rogers was the guest speaker at the Cobb County Republican Party Breakfast at Williamson Brother's Barbecue. Senator Rogers spoke about various tax reform measures coming before the General Assembly this year, school choice in the state of Georgia, illegal immigration, and the role of the Republican Party in protecting the private property rights of the individual.
After Senator Rogers spoke, Virginia Galloway of Americans for Prosperity announced the 2nd Annual AFP Day at the capitol on Thursday, February 7th, 2008 at 7:30 AM.

Saturday; 1 December 2007 - Presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani will be at the Marietta Square tomorrow, Sunday, 2 December at 4:00 PM. It will be a free event open to the public. The weather will be great and this would be a great opportunity to take your family to see a possible future President.

Cobb GOP Hosts Presidential Hopeful Huckabee

Saturday, 08 September 2007 - Presidential hopeful Governor Mike Huckabee of Arkansas spoke to a crowded hanger at McCollum Airfield in Cobb County on Saturday morning. He addressed the crowd on issues concerning preventive health care, illegal immigration, replacing the current tax system with a consumption based tax, (for some reason, he avoided mentioning the Fair Tax ). The crowd was welcomed by District One Cobb County Commissioner Helen Gorham The audience also heard from Sadie Fields of the Georgia Christian Alliance and State Representative Ed Setzler , who introduced Mike Huckabee.

Huckabee to Speak at Cobb GOP Breakfast
Thursday, 30 August 2007 - The Cobb GOP has changed the time and the location of their September 8th breakfast to accommodate an appearance by Presidential Candidate Governor Mike Huckabee. The appearance will be from 9:30 to 11:00 AM, Saturday, September 8th at the Preferred Jet Center of the Cobb County McCollum Airport (1800 Airport Road, Building A, Kennesaw, GA.)
This will be a precursor for his fundraiser later that evening at the home of Ron and Fran Terwilliger.

A Public Apology
28 June 2007 - It is time for me to join the ranks of Paris Hilton, Bill Clinton, and Michael Vick and offer a public apology to the American People. I want to apologize to the American People for doubting that they could rise up and defeat the will of the Republican and Democratic Leadership of the U.S. Senate, The President of the United States, La Raza, MALDEF, and the Lobbyists representing the the American Home Builders Association, big Agro-Business, and others.
I want to apologize to Chris Krok, D.A. King, Tom Tancredo, Chip Rodgers, and Talk Radio. You have all restored my faith in the political process.
By killing the Immigration Reform bill, the American electorate has demonstrated a public will of an intensity the likes of which I have never witnessed before. They have demonstrated that the political process can work if the individual is so stirred.
Now that I have issued my apology, I will follow it with a warning.
A warning to the political power brokers of the old guard, the lobbyists, the Good Old Boys, and the National Committees of both parties:
The average person who sat on the sidelines watching the political world go by as they sat passively by, occasionally complaining, has now entered into the fray. They have been angered, they have learned how to dial, fax, and e-mail their representatives and senators. They have called into talk radio, converted their friends and relatives, protested in the streets like they have never done before.
They have tasted victory, and I believe it is a sensation they will not soon forget.
Come November of '08 they will also taste the political blood of some of those who have stirred their ire.
The liberal community sat on the side quietly relishing the in-fighting of the Republican Party, anticipating additional defeats for Conservatives in '08. But the debate on Immigration will have far reaching effects on America's political process. This issue has struck like a bolt of lightning igniting a brush fire of grass roots activism. The Conservative base has been energized, and you will see a purging / rebirth of the Conservative Movement inside the Republican Party during the national primaries.
We the People have been awakened, and we will be watching.

Pictures From the Cobb GOP Convention
17 June 2007 - Happy father's day! Here are some photographs from the State Convention I figured I would post for future reference, just to prove I was there.There turned out to be more excitement than expected. Senator Chambliss was actually booed when he announced his support for the Immigration "Amnesty" Bill. Governor Perdue continued his family feud with the leadership of the Georgia Assembly over spending cuts. And we saw an actual race for one of the State Committee positions :) So, without further discourse, here are the photographs.

What to Look for at the State Convention
May 17, 2007 - Just some thoughts on what the common delegate might see at the State Convention this year.
While the convention itself will be relatively dull in comparison to past conventions due to the lack of a race for State Chairman, here are some things to watch for:
The Americans For Prosperity and others pushing the Fair Tax. With the immigration debate all but lost based on today's news, this will be the new Holy Grail for Republican Grassroots activists. The clueless mainstream media will begin to "discover" the issue sometime this fall as momentum picks up.
Newt continuing his "Stealth" campaign for President at the Victory Dinner Friday night.
Fred Thompson supporters trying to gin up support.
Senators Isakson and Chambliss pushing the new immigration reform as a "good first step". Expect lots of opposition from the grassroots on this measure , only to be silenced by the State Party with a "go along to get along" attitude. We fought the good fight and lost. Tom Tancredo, where are you? Game Over.

Sue Everhart being congratulated endlessly as she assumes the State Leadership role. This Cobb County resident will run an effective administration with lots of backing from Republican officeholders. Congratulations Sue! It has been a long time coming.

Phil Kent Headlines Cobb GOP Breakfast
Saturday, 05 May 2007 - The May breakfast of the Cobb County Republican party was an interesting get together Saturday morning at William's brothers Barbecue. The crowd of close to 90 people included a rare appearance of Cobb County Commissioner Sam Olens, and his likely challenger, Bill Byrne, fellow blogger Buzz Brockaway, and future State GOP Chair Sue Everhart.
Phil Kent of the GA Gang (9:30 AM Sundays, WAGA-TV) promoted his new book "Foundations of Betrayal" and answered questions from the audience. Most of the questions centered on the Republican Debates last week and illegal immigration.
He posed the question "Which State GOP do you belong to?" Is it the big spending GOP, or the small government GOP?
Speaking of immigration the next round of battles over immigration reform (read: amnesty )have already started. With the reform legislation that was passed last year set to go into effect this July, both the Georgia Board of Reagents are holding hearings with the community to assess the impact of implementation.
